Explorador británico. En 1901 se unió a la expedición de Robert Falcon Scott a la Antártida. Regresó allí en 1908 y dirigió un grupo en trineo que llegó a 156 km (97 mi) del polo. En 1914 condujo la expedición británica transantártica, que planeaba cruzar la Antártida por el Polo Sur. Su nave expedicionaria Endurance fue atrapada por masas flotantes de hielo y navegó a la deriva durante 10 meses antes de ser destruida. Shackleton y su tripulación estuvieron a la deriva sobre témpanos de hielo por otros cinco meses hasta que llegaron a isla Elefante. Él y otros cinco compañeros navegaron 1.300 km (800 mi) hasta la isla Georgia del Sur para conseguir ayuda; luego dirigió cuatro expediciones de socorro para rescatar a sus hombres. Murió en Georgia del Sur al inicio de otra expedición antártica.
